What is Form I-485 (Application to Register Permanent Residence)?

Form I-485 is the USCIS application a person inside the United States files to adjust their immigration status to lawful permanent resident (a green card). It runs to 20+ pages, asks for years of personal history, and is one form in a packet that usually includes a half-dozen supporting USCIS forms.

What Form I-485 is

Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, is the application a person already inside the United States files with US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to become a lawful permanent resident. The 20+ pages cover identity, immigration history, employment, family, residences for the past five years, and a long list of yes/no inadmissibility questions. Get one answer wrong and the application can be denied or returned with a Request for Evidence.

Why I-485 is rarely filed alone

An adjustment-of-status filing almost always includes a packet of supporting forms: I-130 or I-140 (the underlying petition), I-693 (medical exam), I-765 (employment authorization), I-131 (advance parole travel document), and often G-325A. Each form asks for the same identity, address history, and family details — written into different field layouts and section numbers. Manual retyping across the packet is where most of the data-entry errors enter.

Where filling goes wrong

USCIS forms are AcroForm PDFs in their original release, but most law firms and immigration teams scan them after physical signatures, hand-annotations, or photocopying along the way. The form that reaches the team filing the next case is often a flat scan with field positions that drift slightly between versions. Tools that match field names break; tools that detect fields visually with OCR and layout-aware models keep working.

How FillWizard handles I-485 packets

Build one applicant profile with the data USCIS asks for repeatedly — full legal name (with prior names), dates and places of every address for five years, employment, family, A-Number, country of birth and nationality, immigration history. Drop the I-485 plus the supporting forms in. Every field gets mapped from the profile, including ones on scanned versions. Review the flagged exceptions, export the packet, and ship it. A two-day filing session becomes a half-day.
